No 4th series of Jam and Jerusalem

Postby lake titicaka » Thu Nov 26, 2009 7:11 pm

According to Pauline Mclynn the BBC have decided that there will be no more Jam and Jerusalem. I can't believe that they're not allowing them to do another series especially seeing as they allow some less successful comedies to be commissioned time and time again. Maybe we need to start a protest!

I read this too, a bit gutting. But then again I think most sitcoms should end before they slump. But this could possibly spur Jennifer to write something different (well heres hoping).

I too heard the fourth series of J&J/Clatterford had been canceled.

The main complaint seems to be unresolved issues within the ongoing plotline.

How many unresolved issues can we come up with together here?

For starters: what about the son serving in the military in Afganistan?

I could foresee a Christmas special; just another one-off hour-long show that nicely wraps up all the storyline plot issues and gives the viewer closure.
This is sort of how Only Fools and Horses was done; those last specials, notably the 2003 one, closed up the story nicely.

I'd love to see J&J carry on for a while longer. If not, then I hope Saunders will work at writing a film to direct and star in. Tall order, i know....
I'm tired of the same old predictable & recycled ideas that women are putting on film. Maybe it's Saunders' time to give it a try. J&J proves she's able to give us characters with lots of depth and layers - things sorely lacking in comedies that major releases by women are showing us. Nora Ephron hasn't made a decent film in years, and I think Penny Marshall's been too ill to work.
Someone needs to step up, and I think it should be JS.

Here, Here!

What's wrong with Penny Marshall?
Actually, I'd expected J&J to run several seasons.
This is very disappointing.
BBC is really going to Hell, sounds like.
I'd love to play the unresolved issues game but we're a year or two behind on this side of the big water.

Here's hoping JS will write something else soon! In the mean time Pauline Mclynn said in her blog that it would be good if people could contact the BBC to tell them that they're not happy about the decision, not sure if they'll listen though!

Hi everyone!
I heard the news, joined the facebook group and seeing as no one had already done so; I set up a petition. Just something to get everyone on one list as well as the BBC complaints site...here's the link:

Cheers!

Disappointing indeed. But as many others have said: let's hope this makes room for something new and exciting! I know she's said that she wants to write a movie, and that sounds thrilling, but I'm hoping more for a series that you can follow over time. ...mainly because it would last longer;)

I know this is unlikely to happen, but I really wish they would bring Vivienne Vyle back. It was sooo good.

Jennifer Saunders here! Thank you for your help in trying to get the BBC to realise what a bad decision they have made. I am very proud of the series and we did everything we could to meet the BBCs ever changing demands re scheduling and length and nature of the show. We took a huge budget cut for series 3 and still delivered on time on budget and the ratings were picking up despite the poor support and scheduling. I feel very hurt that i had no meetings with any executive prior to being told by my agent that the series was cancelled. 25 years at one company goes for nothing. Please keep campaigning and complaining if only cos it will piss the BBC off. It means alot to all involved. And they are blatently lying when they say they are in discussions about future projects. Would take alot for me to go there again. . Thank you Jennifer Saunders xxx

If they've any sense they should recognise the step change in the quality of writing that characterised both Jam & Jerusalem and Vivienne Vyle and continue to provide it with suitable outlets.

If the BBC wants to remain distinctive and combat claims that it replicates commercial television values, then it could make a start by appreciating the added value and unique viewpoint of mature writing talent.

if any of the obviously insane heads at the bbc were in anyway rude, mean or disrespectful to jennifer saunders or any of the other people involved in the show, they should be tied up and force fed monkey pee. it's only fitting.

and to jjspants - don't let this keep you down, babe. you are absolutely brilliant and you can do ANYTHING!

Consider this.

First the BBC said...

Jam & Jerusalem, not returning for a new series
Publication date: 8 January 2010

Complaint

We've received complaints from viewers who are unhappy that there won't be a new series of Jam & Jerusalem.

The BBC's response

Not bringing Jam & Jerusalem back was a hard decision to make, especially as there was a lot of support for the show. There's never an easy way to relay this kind of news to viewers but rest assured the decision wasn't taken lightly.

The BBC is committed to opening up opportunities for new ideas and creative talent and unfortunately at this time it was decided that Jam & Jerusalem had reached a natural end and should make way for the new.

We are already discussing new television projects with Jennifer Saunders and are eagerly anticipating Roger and Val starring Dawn French and Alfred Molina on BBC Two in the coming weeks.

After which today, the BBC amended their statement to read...

Are the BBC mad?

JS you could try for funding from our national broadcaster here in the a#se end of the world (the locals have been making a total mess of it lately).

Disappointed.

Why, Duncan, it almost sounds like you actually believe the BBC would read this site...

Will I be seeing you at The Great Pumpkin's patch next Halloween as well?

As for hurt feelings and blatant lies, one should stop to carefully consider a bridge and the time and care it takes to build before scratching that match.

I love how much coverage this story is getting. I'd love to know how many fans have signed the petition and sent emails to Auntie Beeb. After re-watching the previous series, I'm sad they decided not to bring it back, I have hidden bits funnier than the first time round. But i'm still eagery awaiting whatever these new projects they discussed with Jennifer actually are.

These executives/decision makers never fail to astonish me.

Noted in a post above the BBC claim they are “committed to opening up opportunities for new ideas & creative talent”. A little bit wankie but ok, how bloody new & creative do you have to be for christ sake !! In my opinion JS is up there with the best of them re “new ideas & creative talent”.

A few other interesting points have been noted from the posts above : 1. They did not even contact JS re axing, 2. They stated that they were in discussions with JS about future projects, 3. They then changed statement to looking forwarding to working with JS again in the future, 4. Seems JS did not have an easy time during series 3. Mmmmmm. (Many thanks JS for finishing/delivering 3 = values).

We really enjoy J & J, so receiving this news this morning (after an arrogant/patronising clown smashed into the back of my car, apparently I wasn’t suppose to stop at that red light) was disappointing. We all seem to be working at break neck speed so it is at times good to sit down for half an hour or so and totally forget things (rare but what I thought TV/entertainment was all about ), J&J did this; actually I found it quite invigorating. So for what it is worth thanks JS.

Ahhh my hire car is ready (and I have calmed down) so if there is anything we here in Australia can do to assist you in the motherland to annoy the crap out of the dickhead decisions makers just let us know (maybe I haven’t calm down). Oh and just out of interest could somebody in the future post here what exactly new and creative opportunity the BBC spent your money on. Thanks and all the very best.
